Baklawa vs Baklava

Baklawa vs. Baklava: What’s in a Name?

If you’ve ever wondered why we spell our treats with a “w,” you’ve come to the right place. While the world often uses the terms interchangeably, the distinction lies in the regional traditions and the delicate art of the recipe.

The Regional Roots

Generally speaking, "Baklava" (with a 'v') refers to the Turkish and Greek versions of the dessert. "Baklawa" (with a 'w') is the traditional spelling used across the Levant—specifically in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Palestine.

At Baklabox, we honour the Levantine (Arabic) tradition as Alissar is of Lebanese origin.

Here is how that changes your tasting experience:

1. The Sweetness Factor

  • Baklava (Turkish/Greek): Often uses a heavy, honey-based or sugar syrup that is poured over the pastry hot, resulting in a "soak" that makes the bottom layers soft and very sweet.
  • Baklawa (Levantine): We use a lighter, scented syrup (often infused with a hint of rosewater or orange blossom). It is applied more sparingly to ensure the pastry remains light and crisp, rather than syrupy.

2. The Crunch (Filo Layers)

  • Baklava: Tends to be slightly denser and moister.
  • Baklawa: This is all about the crunch. We focus on ultra-thin, flaky layers of filo that shatter delicately when you bite into them. It’s a lighter, more air-filled texture.

3. The Aromatics

One of the biggest differences is the scent. Our Baklawa is famous for its floral notes. We use high-quality aromatics like orange blossom water to create a sensory experience that starts before you even take a bite.

4. The Butter

While both use butter, the Levantine style often utilizes highly clarified butter (ghee) to achieve a clean, nutty finish that doesn't overpower the taste of the premium pistachios inside. At Alissar’s Kitchen we make our own ghee from the best unsaled butter

The Verdict?

There is no "better" version—only different traditions!

However, if you prefer a dessert that is less sugary, more aromatic, and significantly crunchier, then you are officially a lover of Baklawa.
